What are you training for?
It’s a question we ask a lot at WildFire CrossFit in Phoenix.
For some people, the answer comes quickly.
A competition.
A race.
A heavier back squat.
Their first pull-up.
Losing body fat or building muscle.
Those are great goals.
For a lot of people, though, the first answer is:
“Nothing.”
And I’d challenge you to think about that a little differently.
You’re Training for Your Life
Maybe you’re training to carry your own suitcase through the airport.
To get up and down from the floor easily.
To play with your kids or grandkids without needing to sit on the sidelines.
To hike on vacation.
To have enough energy left after work to enjoy your evening.
Maybe you're training so that 10, 20, or 30 years from now, you can still say YES when someone asks you to do something fun.
That’s training for something.
That's one of the reasons we believe so strongly in CrossFit.
Fitness isn't supposed to exist only inside the gym.
The squats, deadlifts, carries, running, rowing, gymnastics, and conditioning we do are building strength and capacity that you get to take into your everyday life.
The goal isn't simply to be good at working out.
The goal is to be good at living.
What Do You Want Your Body to Be Able to Do?
We spend a lot of time thinking about what we want our bodies to look like.
What's the number on the scale?
What's my body fat percentage?
How do my clothes fit?
Those things can absolutely matter.
I also want people to ask a bigger question:
What do I want my body to be capable of?
Today.
Next year.
At 50.
At 60.
At 70.
At 80.
Strength matters.
Balance matters.
Muscle matters.
Cardiovascular fitness matters.
Mobility matters.
And the earlier we start building those things—and continue building them—the more capability we have to take with us into the rest of our lives.
Sometimes You’re Training for Something You Haven’t Discovered Yet
One of our WildFire members reminded me of this recently.
They posted a video of themselves doing a back squat along with a caption that caught my attention:
“The last two months are exactly what my life was missing for way too long.”
Then they said something I loved:
“This definitely was out of the realm of possibilities.”
Out of the realm of possibilities.
Two months earlier, they didn't know what they would be capable of today.
They simply started.
They showed up.
They learned.
They got stronger.
And somewhere along the way, their definition of what was possible started changing.
They also shared how rewarding the process had been and how much the WildFire community had meant to them along the way.
That's the part of CrossFit that's difficult to understand until you've experienced it.
You Don't Have to Be Fit Before You Start CrossFit
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from people looking for a CrossFit gym in Phoenix is:
“I need to get in shape before I start CrossFit.”
You don't.
CrossFit is designed to meet you where you are.
If you can't do a pull-up today, we'll give you a pulling movement you can do and build from there.
If you've never touched a barbell, we'll teach you how to move it safely before worrying about how much weight is on it.
If running isn't appropriate for you right now, we'll find another way to build your cardiovascular fitness.
Your Day One isn't supposed to look like someone else's Year Ten.
You start with what you can do today.
Then we build.
That's Where Coaching and Community Matter
Getting stronger is rewarding.
Doing something you thought was impossible is even better.
Having other people there to experience it with you changes the entire process.
At WildFire CrossFit, you're surrounded by coaches helping you progress and people working toward their own version of better right beside you.
Someone else's workout may look completely different from yours.
That's okay.
You're not there to become them.
You're there to discover what YOU are capable of.
And sometimes the person next to you helps you realize there's one more rep in you.
Your coach sees strength you haven't recognized yet.
The community celebrates something you once thought was “out of the realm of possibilities.”
That's what makes training together so powerful.
So, What Are You Training For?
Maybe it's weight loss.
Maybe it's strength.
Maybe you want to feel confident in your body again.
Maybe you want to keep up with your kids.
Maybe you want to travel when you retire.
Maybe you simply know you want to be healthier than you are today.
You don't need an impressive answer.
You can train for your life.
And you don't have to know everything you're capable of before you begin.
Sometimes you have to start...
And let yourself find out.
